Robert J. Glushko Award for the Best Bachelor’s and Master’s Thesis in Cognitive Science

The Jury of the Robert J. Glushko Award for the Best Bachelor’s and Master’s Thesis in Cognitive Science, composed of Dr. Małgorzata Szupica-Pyrzanowska, Dr. hab. Jacek Rogala, and Dr. Natalia Karczewska, has decided to award the following prizes:
To Mr. Wojciech Stempniak for the best Bachelor’s Thesis in Cognitive Science
(Thesis titled: “ Struktura zależnościowa koordynacji – analiza korpusów Universal Dependencies“, written under the supervision of Prof. Adam Przepiórkowski)
Justification:
The innovative element of the thesis lies in the examination of coordinate structures using the SUD annotation scheme and the extension of the analysis to typologically diverse languages (initial, final, mixed). The Author’s research maturity is evident in his understanding of the importance of replication studies, and thus in the examination of the generalizability of results, as well as in his attention to data quality. Despite the use of technical terminology, the formal aspects of the thesis are characterized by a precise style, academic language, rich vocabulary, and strong grammatical proficiency. The content is presented in a reader-friendly manner, which not only demonstrates Author’s full understanding of the topic but also his skill in effectively conveying the acquired knowledge.
and
To Mr. Sebastian Kamiński for the best Master’s Thesis in Cognitive Science
(Thesis titled: “Comparison of linguistic characteristics of lies detected by humans and machine models”, written under the supervision of Dr. Julian Zubek and Dr. Justyna Sarzyńska-Wawer)
Justification:
The use of a machine learning model for lie detection remains a notable novelty. The methodology of the thesis is impressive in its scope: 13 linguistic markets, a large sample (400 participants), and 1,498 analyzed utterances. The strengths of the thesis also include strong argumentation, well-developed theses, and an organized structure in both the theoretical and practical parts, allowing the reader to clearly follow the work. The results obtained in the study may bring significant social benefits.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Award Laureates and their Supervisors!
