Robert J. Glushko Award

This award honors the best undergraduate and master’s theses in the field of cognitive science. It aims to promote academic excellence and encourage research in interdisciplinary areas related to cognition and cognitive systems.

The Cognitive Science Teaching Council will be awarding a prize for the best thesis in Cognitive Science starting in the 2024/25 academic year. The award was founded by Robert J. Glushko, an Adjunct Full Professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Glushko holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology, UC San Diego, a M.S. in Software Engineering from the Wang Institute and a B.A. in Experimental Psychology from Stanford University. Along with his wife Pamela Samuelson, a law professor at UC Berkeley, Glushko created and funded the Rumelhart, Elman, and Glushko prizes awarded annually by the Cognitive Science Society. They also fund annual prizes for best undergraduate thesis in Cognitive Science at more than twenty-five universities.

Applications for the Prize can be sent by the 15th of October to rada.kognitywistyki@psych.uw.edu.pl. Applications should include a brief justification stating the merits of the thesis submitted for the Award. The thesis should be attached to the email. Regulations of the Prize are available here.

Professor Józef Kozielecki Award

Graduating students can apply for the Dean’s Award in one or more of the following categories:

  • Scientific activity (e.g., publications, conferences, student research clubs)
  • Organizational activity (e.g., student government, event organization)
  • Social activity (e.g., volunteer work, community engagement)

Applications are accepted until early September, and the awards are decided during the same month. Exact dates and application procedures are announced annually by email.

Professor Józef Kozielecki

1936 – 2017

A pioneer of cognitive psychology in Poland, best known for his work on decision theory.
His books always reached beyond superficial data, searching for philosophical meaning
in science and social reality. He was also the author of historical essays, fiction, and journalistic writings.

REGULATIONS

  1. The Dean’s Award of the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Warsaw for the Best Thesis,
    hereinafter referred to as the Award, is inspired by the initiative of Professor Józef Kozielecki.
    It is awarded annually to graduates of the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Warsaw who, in a given academic year,
    submit a thesis distinguished by a high level of quality.
  2. The Award is granted in three categories:
    • For the best master’s thesis in the Psychology and Psychology (WISP) programs
    • For the best master’s thesis in the Cognitive Science program
    • For the best bachelor’s thesis in the Applied Animal Psychology program
  3. The Award is of a scientific nature, i.e. the sole criterion is the value of the thesis as a specific academic dissertation.
    The main consideration is substantive merit, and additionally, other aspects such as the level of competence
    demonstrated in preparing a scientific text.
  4. The amount of the Award is 2000 PLN and it cannot be divided. Each year, one award is granted in each category,
    always in full. However, due to the large number of Psychology students, it is possible to grant both a 1st and 2nd prize
    in that category.
  5. Applications for the Award must be submitted to the Student Section by August 30 of each year.

  6. Applications for the Award may only concern individuals who meet both of the following conditions:
    • They passed the diploma examination after August 30 of the previous academic year
    • They received very good or excellent grades in both reviews of their thesis
  7. Applications for the Award may be submitted by:
    • Graduates — authors of the theses
    • Reviewers of diploma theses
    • Thesis supervisors
    • The Dean and Vice Deans
    • Student scientific societies
    • Student government bodies
  8. Each applicant may submit only one nomination.
    Applications should include a concise justification explaining the academic value of the thesis proposed for the Award.
  9. A preliminary review of applications is carried out by the Student Section,
    which verifies compliance with the conditions specified in point 6 of these regulations.
  10. The Vice Dean for Student Affairs proposes the composition of the Award Jury,
    taking into account the nature of the submitted theses and the provisions of point 11 of the regulations.
    The Jury should consist of at least three people who are authorized to supervise theses.
    Jury members cannot include persons who supervised (were the thesis advisors of)
    the theses submitted for the Award in the given competition year.
  11. The Jury consists exclusively of employees of the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Warsaw.
  12. The Jury is appointed by the Dean of the Faculty.
  13. The Jury establishes its own working rules, in accordance with these regulations.
    The Jury may appoint additional expert reviewers.
  14. The decision regarding the Award must be made by September 20 of each year.
    The Jury presents the Dean of the Faculty with a report indicating the authors and titles of the awarded theses,
    or a justified statement explaining why the Award was not granted that year.
    The Jury’s verdict is final. After the final report is submitted to the Dean, the Jury is dissolved.
  15. Based on the report mentioned in point 14, the Dean of the Faculty takes the necessary steps to
    present the Award to the selected laureates.
