Programme Structure

1. Core

These foundational courses are obligatory and include (among others):

  • Diploma Seminar: Held across all four semesters to guide students through the preparation and writing of their Master’s thesis. (12 ECTS)
  • Research Lab: Starts in the second semester, with full participation in semesters 3 and 4. Students join a lab to engage in active research, ideally tied to their thesis work. (10 ECTS)
  • Internship: A research or industry placement during the final year, aimed at applying and expanding acquired skills. (5 ECTS)

Credits: 33 ECTS

2. Modules

Most courses are grouped into six thematic modules reflecting different areas of cognitive science. Within each module, students must complete at least the minimum ECTS indicated. The modules offer both introductory and advanced courses.

  • Experimental Methods – min. 8 ECTS
  • Programming & Modeling – min. 10 ECTS
  • Statistics & Machine Learning – min. 6 ECTS
  • Language – min. 7 ECTS
  • Philosophical – min. 4 ECTS
  • Cognitive Neuroscience – min. 6 ECTS

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements for each module, students must earn a further 24 ECTS credits by taking additional courses from one or more modules of their choice. This encourages students to build expertise in selected areas instead of remaining at an introductory level across all modules.

Credits: 65 ECTS (41 from individual module minima + 24)

3. Electives

Students can choose elective courses from the list dedicated to the programme or from the wider offer of the cooperating UW faculties. Module courses above the required 65 ECTS may count as electives too.

Credits: 16 ECTS

4. General UW Courses (OGUNs)

General university courses (OGUNs) offered by the University of Warsaw, to be completed during the first or second year.

Credits: 6 ECTS
